God Has a Sense of Humor

By Nancy Leeder

I already wrote the story of my car getting totaled, saving a child and a basketball player from getting hit. I was worried about how to replace the car on a college budget when dinner was Ramen noodles for 10 cents a pack.

I kept looking for a replacement car, and everything was out of my budget. I had multiple dreams for over a week, and I saw $800 floating in the air. This kept happening, so I thought God must be telling me I would find a car at that price, which was all I could afford at that time.

On Sunday, after church, I was talking with one of my friends who was moving from AZ to MN and needed to sell her Toyota Corolla for $800 fast because she was moving in a couple of days. My eyes bugged out...that was the price God told me about in my dream, so I said I would buy it, sight unseen.

I arrived at her house the next day with cash in hand, and she handed me the keys and paperwork. As I was opening the car door, she mentioned the clutch could be a little tricky. I stopped and said, " Clutch?” And she said “Yes, you do drive stick, don't you?” I said no, I didn’t. The expression on her face was sadness; then she said, "You don't have to buy the car." I took a deep breath and said I would stick to my word and purchase the car.

She was relieved. "Can anyone drive it for you until you learn how?" I swallowed hard and said, "No, I can figure it out. I am a fast learner."  I drove the Corolla home about five miles away in first gear the whole way, bucking like a broncho. People behind me were yelling at me and honking their horns, but I continued driving until I got home.

That experience taught me to ask more questions when buying anything sight unseen. I also learned that I could do something I never thought I could do, and I never wanted to drive a stick shift. Finally, I became so adept at driving a stick shift that my daughters didn't realize I was shifting because it was so smooth. I mastered driving a manual transmission car!

Not only was it a funny experience purchasing the car, but when I took it to a mechanic friend, he noticed something odd. I asked what he meant. He said that all four tires were a different size and wondered if the car wobbled as I drove. I told him it wanted to steer left, but I thought it was my inexperience in driving a stick shift, and he laughed.

Apparently, my friend, when she needed to replace a tire, would only replace one tire at a time, not worrying about matching tire sizes. She always bought what was on sale regardless of tire size.

God has a great sense of humor and has always encouraged me to push my boundaries to grow, and I am very grateful for that.
